  11.        These release notes describe FDDIXPress release 3.6.
  12.        FDDIXPress is a network interface controller (board and
  13.        software) providing FDDI connectivity for Silicon Graphicsr
  14.        workstations and servers.
  15.  
  16.        Note:  Packaged with this software is a separate sheet that
  17.               contains the Software License Agreement.  This
  18.               software is provided to you solely under the terms
  19.               and conditions of the Software License Agreement.
  20.               Please take a few moments to review the Agreement.

  22.        For the IRIS Indigo, Indigo, and CHALLENGE M workstations
  23.        and servers, FDDIXPress has two configurations of the FDDI
  24.        board: FDDIXPI and FDDIXPID. Each of these boards interfaces
  25.        to the system through one GIO Bus connector.  The FDDIXPI
  26.        board allows one single-attachment FDDI connection to an
  27.        FDDI concentrator; the FDDIXPID board provides a dual-
  28.        attachment FDDI connection directly to the dual ring, or one
  29.        or two connections to FDDI concentrators.  An Indigo or
  30.        Indigo workstation can accommodate one of these boards. A
  31.        CHALLENGE M server can accommodate one or two FDDIXPress
  32.        boards.  When FDDIXPress is installed, the station can also
  33.        use its built-in Ethernet network interface, thus having two
  34.        (or three) network interfaces.  FDDIXPress for IRIS Indigo,
  35.        Indigo, and CHALLENGE M has been designed for customer
  36.        installation. All the necessary tools and instructions are
  37.        provided with the product.

  39.        The FDDIXPress board provides one dual-attachment connection
  40.        to the dual ring, or one or two connections to a
  41.        concentrator for the following platforms:  CHALLENGE L,
  42.        CHALLENGE XL, Onyx, IRIS POWER Series, Professional Series,
  43.        IRIS Crimson, and Personal IRIS servers, workstations, and
  44.        supercomputers. The FDDIXPress board interfaces to these
  45.        systems through one VMEbus connector.  CHALLENGE L,
  46.        CHALLENGE XL, Onyx, IRIS Crimson, and IRIS POWER Series
  47.        workstations and servers can accommodate multiple FDDIXPress
  48.        boards; the exact number depends on the workstation or
  49.        server specifics.  A Personal IRIS workstation can
  50.        accommodate one FDDI board.  FDDIXPress for the VMEbus-
  51.        option slot on all of the above-mentioned platforms is
  52.        designed for installation by authorized service personnel
  53.        only.

  178.        FDDIXPress software runs on any CHALLENGE, Onyx, IRIS POWER
  179.        Series, Professional Series, IRIS Crimson, Personal IRIS,
  180.        Indigo, or IRIS Indigo workstation,supercomputer, or
  181.        server.  However, the appropriate FDDI controller board must
  182.        be installed and connected to the FDDI ring.

  185.        1.4  _O_n_l_i_n_e__R_e_l_e_a_s_e__N_o_t_e_s

  187.        After you install the online documentation for a product
  188.        (the _r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s subsystem), you can view the release notes on
  189.        your screen.

  191.        If you have a graphics system, select ``Release Notes'' from
  192.        the Tools submenu of the ToolChest. This displays the
  193.        _g_r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s(1) graphical browser for the online release notes.
  194.        Refer to the _g_r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s(1) man page for information on
  195.        options to this command.

  197.        If you have a nongraphics system, you can use the _r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s
  198.        command. Refer to the _r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s(1) man page for accessing the
  199.        online release notes.

  201.        Note:  You can read the online release notes for most
  202.               products before installing the software.  Refer to
  203.               the booklet in your CD-ROM case for more information.

  207.        This release of FDDIXPress does not support loading the
  208.        miniroot over the FDDI ring; Silicon Graphics computers
  209.        cannot be booted over the FDDI ring.  This limitation does
  210.        not affect loading the miniroot over an Ethernet network.  A
  211.        system can boot (load the miniroot) over its Ethernet
  212.        network, and, thereafter, function with both Ethernet and
  213.        FDDI network connections.

  216.               booting over the network.  See Section 2.4,
  217.               ``Configuring a Diskless Station.''
